Is Your Home Ready For Spring? What You Can Do To Protect Your Home

Posted on

Winter has settled in and before you know it, spring will be here. With spring comes warmer temperatures and an increased risk for heavy storms. Make sure your home is ready for this inclement weather. Although you can't prevent or avoid harsh weather, you can take measures to minimize damage to your property. Here are some tips to get you started.

Double-Check Your Insurance Policy

Take some time to review your policy. This is especially important if you haven't made any updates to your policy in several years. Weather can be unpredictable, but in the event the unexpected happens, it's comforting to know that you will be taken care of.

However, if you don't have the right amount of coverage, such as an undervalued policy compared to the value of your home and belongings, or you don't have the correct coverage components, such as flood protection, you might not be protected. Have your insurance agent review your policy with you to see if you need to make any updates.

Have A Roof Inspection

Just before spring is an excellent time to have your roof inspected. Even a small level of damage, such as a few loose shingles, is enough to cause significant damage. Loose shingles create an inlet for water to seep into the under layers of your roofing and eventually cause water damage inside your home.

A roof inspection can highlight a problem before it becomes a major issue. As an added tip, if your home suffers water damage due to a roofing problem and it is discovered that severe negligence in terms of roof care is to blame, your insurance policy may deny your claim.

Do Some Landscaping Maintenance

You can also protect your home by attending to any landscaping needs your property may have. This is especially important when it comes to any damaged limbs. During the winter, heavy snow and ice accumulation can put excess pressure on limbs.

With heavy rain and high winds, a weak limb can easily snap off and fall on your home or other property and cause damage or serious injury. The best way to avoid this type of mishap is to have any weak or damaged limbs removed. If you're unable to do this on your own, call on a professional to assist you with this.

It is your responsibility to protect your home. Make sure you are taking steps to accomplish this goal.
